ABOUT PUGS

Pugs have a big personality in a little body. They have one of the best personalities where they can easily transition from a type of clownish to calm energy. There are two different colors recognized by the AKC which include black and fawn. Apricot is recognized as fawn by the AKC because it is a variation instead of a true color. The pug is considered a small breed because they are about 14-18 lbs. Since the breed is small, it is the ideal breed making them great in various environments. Pugs have flat faces which makes breathing harder for the breed. This means if you commit to a pug, you commit to the snorting, snoring, and their low tolerance for heat. Pugs are the ideal breed for any situation whether you have children, live in an apartment or farm, or if you have other pets. With proper care, your pug should live around 13-15 years.

BREED INFO

TEMPERAMENT:

Pugs are one of the best breeds to own just based on temperament. This breed is a people pleaser and will do anything to make you laugh or smile. They have a clownish energy that sometimes lets them get away with stuff but are also so great because they can quickly transition from energetic to calm. This is a great breed because they are good at adapting to their environment whether it's a little bit chaotic with younger kids or being in a more calm household with older people.

DIET:

I recommend a dry food diet instead of wet just based on personal experience and convenience. I do not recommend feeding grain free food due to the issues associated with being on it long term. If you are wanting to go natural, do your research with raw diets. Another natural alternative is homemade food which you will also need to supplement to make sure your pug gets adequate nutrition. You want to feed your pug according to the chart on the back of a bag of dog food. I ultimately recommend to feed your dog based on their needs. If your dog seems to have a high metabolism you might be able to get away with feeding more while some tend to need to be on a weight control food. You also want to feed treats or table scraps in moderation since the breed is prone to obesity. When feeding table scraps, keep in mind what foods are safe for consumption. Take advantage of their treat drive when training.

HEALTH:

Pugs don't require an excessive amount of exercise but should have a moderate amount since they are prone to becoming overweight. They are very playful which makes exercise easier with the breed. I like to exercise my pugs by letting them run around the yard for about 20-30 minutes or taking them on short walks depending on the weather. While exercising, keep in mind temperature so that your pug won't become overheated.
A pug's coat should have a healthy glossy appearance to it. It is pretty easy to maintain with occasional baths and moderate brushings. One thing to keep in mind with picking your pug color is that black pug shed less then fawn pug, this is because of single and double coats. When bathing make sure not to aspirate your pug but thoroughly clean in between wrinkles of the face and body. Use supplements such as fish oil if you want to maintain your pugs glossy appearance.
